DA’MO’Ś DICTIONARY AND PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

Following is a list of words to be found in the language of the Ga’-Yah Da`Mo’ś and the members of the Fliit Ridan (including the Ban-dimiir, the Nehiil, the To’-mii, the Da’Mo’ś, the Nephiil, the Dtt` Na’mii, the Sheh-raiphii, Kravm, and others). It is extremely common to find a word representing many concepts or ideas or items depending on the context in which it is used, the situation at time of use, the words preceding or following its use, and the person to whom one is speaking! This has made a study of the language challenging, since there are so many variables included in interpretation. Phonetic pronunciation is provided whenever possible. Glottal stops, gutturals and sharps are in the language and practice is required to master some words.

Many translations in this text will be non-literal, although an attempt has been made for literal translations whenever feasible. Many words cannot be translated easily since the words represent the essence of an idea or thing as opposed to an actual thing. And since many Fliit Ridan words found their way into human languages in the regions settled in and were altered over time, it has been difficult to trace the correct meanings and words. Also, while we have included words that represent a gender, it should be noted that in the Fliit Ridan, they recognized many variants of gender and it was not an issue- how a member of the Fliit wished to be addressed was how they were addressed.

There are many words in the language of the Da’Mo’ś that appear random and unconnected to each other in terms of word origins. This is due in part to the following:

1. The original language fell into disuse over a period of many centuries
2. An on-going flow between many people, tribes, cultures and worlds led to a complex mingling and combining of many languages, words, phrases, etc
3. Many Da`Mo’ś words still incorporate the ancient High Language, in use at the time of the arrival of the mythic Hahko’n; this obscure language is still used frequently in ritual and common use, though meanings may have changed. Spelling may vary according to whether the word is used in ritual or daily use.
4. In most cases, a plural for a word is created by adding i’ or ii at the end of the word. For example, b`tehl is the word for a courier; if there is more than one courier, the term used is b`tehli’ (bach-TELL-igh). The word for “word” is ab; if speaking of “words”, the term is abii (a-bee).

It should be noted that in the old High Language, there are some pronunciation differences. For example, the current sound of ah at the end of a word was pronounced uh; a High Born would say Ehlkahnah as Ehl-CAW-nuh, whereas in the modern speech it is pronounced as Ehl-CAW-naw or pronounce the word diiah, pronounced currently as DEE-awe as DEE-uh. This can also be heard at times in the pronunciations of the eh sound, for example: the word a-lehthiiah is currently pronounced A-leh-THEE-awe, but a High Born might pronounce it A-lʊh-THEE-ʊh. The differences are subtle, but a careful listener will hear them, and be able to detect those of the High Born House, who still use the ancient pronunciations in some cases.

Because they did not appear to use many conjunctions, we have created certain words to aid in translation or to make sense of, or build relationships to meanings, in sentences, making them as close to what could be surmised to fit the language. These joining words include: di’: (digh) by, e (eh) an; eh`: (eck) and; also; as well, too; essũ: (eh-SOO) are; hehśii: (heh-SEE) these; hehsaa: those; hehso’: that; tha’: that used as conjunction; hābr: (HAY-ber) has.

‘ behind a letter indicates the long vowel sound in most cases: a, ee, oh, igh, etc
ś indicates a hard s, as in hiss
` after an h, b, j or k indicates a sharp stop, hard sound or chopped guttural, although over time, the sharp J` sound has become slurred. The new pronunciation is showed beside the traditional
– breaks a word to show the accent is on the first syllable; without the -, the accent is usually on the middle or last syllable, with the exception of  Va’Nax VAY-nacks) and Da’Mo’ś (DAY-mōss)

a’draśto’: (ā-DRASS-to) courage; bravery in the face of something frightening
ad-vii: (AD-vee) Needing no protection; self-sufficient
a’-fiil: (A-feel) a person or being who does not experience sexual feelings or desires, is not sexually attracted to others, or has low or absent interest in or desire for sexual activity, though they can romantically love another; also called a’fiilo’

Ahdehślaht Shiimehn: (awe-dess-LOT- shee-MEN) A ceremony in which an individual gives away his/her most prized possession so the possessions are never counted more important than the living beings known to the giver

Ahdii: (awe-DEE) title of address for a person of equal rank; a peer address

Ah-drahn: (AWE-drawn) a figure from the Before time, little is known of this entity anymore. She may have been a leader of a people or great chieftain

Ah`hinah Gair Shiimehn: (awk-HIH-NAH-gair-shee-MEN) literally, “the ring of protection ceremony”; performed when those who have accepted responsibility to train and protect a celebrant are vow-bonded to same and become kin-wards to the celebrant. This ceremony takes place at birth and at the time of the Threshold Ceremony

Ahpehniimuhn: (awe-PEH-nee-muhn)  a ceremonial word that is used to indicate one whom all trust to complete a vow or task; also used as a word of affirmation or as a vow word between Companions to indicate absolute faith and trust. As a word of affirmation, it is similar to the Earth word “Amen” or “so it is as it is spoken”

The manner of the ritual cleansing is determined by the Temple Elders and is intended to represent going from the dark to the Light of Knowledge

bahchahl: (baw-CHAWL) one who is both male and female or all; this can mean physically or other. Can refer to a hermaphrodite or a transsexual. NOT a derogatory term, as the Accordance, Fliit Ridan and worlds do not focus on gender, sex roles or sexual division, but on skills and character. The word ko’zũm, or “two in one” is also used
