The Back of the World

This one is for all the minds, hearts and lives wasted by those who thought or think it was/is moral to turn people into wage slaves and dehumanize them, reduce their dreams and hopes to long hours serving those who thought human labor and cleaning up after themselves beneath their dignity.

THE BACK OF THE WORLD

Suddenly, she woke up. It was only her second night in the big house, and the unfamiliar sounds jangled her nerves, making a deep sleep impossible.

Her first day had found her in tears by evening. She’d gone to the basement bedroom she would share with two of the other female servants, her mind re-visiting time and again the extensive list of rules and the list of instructions given to her in the morning that she had been told to remember and begin putting into practice by the next day.

“Servants must not be seen in any areas of the house at the same time as His Lordship or her Ladyship or any of their guests.
Servants must not address His Lordship or Her Ladyship unless spoken to.
Be sure that you are never heard by the ladies or gentlemen of the house while you are at work in any area of the estate.
Always give way and turn away of you meet one of your employers or betters on the stairs.
NEVER offer your opinions to the ladies and gentlemen of the house.…”

The list had seemed endless; her day measured out in rules from waking until the last hours before sleep. And so many of them were what she was not allowed to do, that she felt stifled and choked even now, hours after the work list had been handed to her and the rules read out….
