Breaking Against the Rocks

This is for Nerine-  because she has heard the Ocean’s call and danced on warm Greek sands while mermaids sang

BREAKING AGAINST THE ROCKS

The rocky outcropping was her favorite place to sit on a warm day. She could watch boats pass by in the distance while gulls and terns swooped and called overhead, the salt spray slicking her seaweed brown hair down.

She liked to watch the people on the beach beyond her little perch, too- so much splashing and shouting, laughter and bright colored clothing. She wondered what drew these people to the water she loved. Why do they come? It was hard to know their reasons- most of them didn’t swim well or strongly, several a day had to be pulled from the water, spluttering, in a panic, or crying the ocean from their eyes, tears streaming down their face.

She loved the ocean, had grown up with it her entire life and marveled at the life in it, but was puzzled why people who lived so far from it  would come and want to play here. After all, if you didn’t know the ocean, didn’t study it, learn from it, understand it, what could it really mean to you?…..
