Halloween
I have no issue with a religion, if that is what comforts you. But I take great issue against dominionism and theocracy, against religious fanaticism and religious mania, against the ideology of religious oppression masquerading as religion- religion used in this way is, and has always been, a tragic tool in the hands of men and women who hunger for power and control over others, and who are terrified of human freedom and self-determination. In the US, theocracy and dominionism have become a dominating influence in the Republican party… they are a clear and present danger to individual liberty…
Halloween
She remembered Halloween, but of course, she never told anyone. She remembered how much fun it used to be- the costumes, the candy, the laughter as they walked house to house midst dried leaves lying on the sidewalks and roads, the welcoming lights in each window signaling a friendly moment of delighted pretend fright and then a tumbling of treats into their bags. How they’d take their bounty home, and their mom would sort through it, freezing the candy bars to use in school lunches for several months, letting them over-indulge for a few hours before sending them up to brush their teeth and fall into bed.
“Just tonight” she would declare and they’d all dive into a feast of Butterfingers, Mars Bars, Milky Ways, caramel apples and popcorn balls, suckers and Tootsie Rolls- the giant ones that flooded their mouths with the taste of chocolate. Halloween was the next best night to Christmas Eve, with its promise of the sweet, prolonged savoring of a one-night neighborhood hunt for treats.
But no one talked about that, now…..
