SENTINEL

Look heavenward and gaze upon a sparkling sea of stars,
Close your eyes and feel the flow of time;
Listen to the voices that ride the cosmic winds-
And know that once the Universe was mine.

Look heavenward, look far beyond your moon, beyond your sun,
And sense the others out beyond the bar;
They call in silent voices to the children of the Earth
As they ail upon that shimmering sea of stars

Look heavenward- and know we kept our promise
To others long dead, dust returned to dust:
“Uphold uplift the children of Tomorrow”-
this was our duty, destiny and trust.

(I prayed the memories gone, faces forgotten,
But now they rise and beckon from the spheres.
A million stars remind me of the life I left behind
And I tremble with old longings and new fears.)

Look heavenward and gaze upon a sparkling sea of stars,
Then believe the love I hold for you, my friend,
Is timeless, shining as the stars eternal,
And burning with the brightness this love lends.

Look heavenward and gaze upon a sparkling sea of stars,
And please! Hold to the promise of your hand-
Dear gods! I need a heart to rest in once again,
Since pledging life and heart unto this land.

Look heavenward and gaze upon a sparkling sea of stars,
Close your eyes and feel the flow of time;
Listen to the voices that ride the cosmic winds-
and know that once the universe was mine.
