One Memory

ONE MEMORY

Of the worlds and women and men I’ve known,
One memory stands bright and clear:
The sparkling Lady of Terra,
That my heart will hold ever dear.

Of the worlds and women and men I’ve known
(for underneath we are all the same),
The raven-tressed Terran is tied to my soul
Though the stars fade and all the worlds wane.

I have journeyed far, I have travelled long
Through space, beyond worlds and time;
But the promises made in that far-away place
Will forever rest in my mind.
For a daughter remained on that cherished sphere
(sleeping softly ‘tween Venus and Mars),
And the Lady vowed to befriend the child,
Born of Terra yet dreaming of stars.
For there would be none who could shelter her heart
If she told of the voice from a star;
she needed a friend but I could not remain-
Duty bound me to places afar.
Then the Lady stepped forward and offered her vow,
Pledging friendship to comfort that heart;
Through the tears, peace had come with that Promise
When the time came for me to depart.

Of the worlds and women and men I’ve known,
There are some I shall never forget
(I have left behind all that was best of myself
On Terra- a daughter- whose blood lives there yet).
Of the worlds and women and men I’ve known,
One memory stands bright and clear:
The sparkling Lady of Terra,
With her hand in my daughter’s , so dear.

Of the worlds and women and men I’ve known
(for underneath we are all the same),
The raven-tressed Terran is tied to my soul
Though the stars fade and all the worlds wane.
